The Syracuse Moving Checklist: 8 Weeks Out to Move Day
A week-by-week moving checklist tailored for Central New York moves, with the timing that actually matters and the things most checklists miss.

Most moving checklists are written by people who have never actually moved. Here is the version we send our customers, focused on the things that actually move the needle.
Eight weeks out. Get quotes from three movers. Verify all of them on safer.fmcsa.dot.gov if any of the moves cross state lines. Book the company you trust, not the cheapest. The moving industry has a long tail of bad actors.
Six weeks out. Start culling. Anything you have not used in two years is probably not coming with you. The cheapest way to reduce moving cost is to move less stuff. Donate, sell, or trash.
Four weeks out. Submit change of address with USPS, the IRS, your bank, your employer, your insurance, and any subscriptions. Schedule disconnect dates with your utilities and order new service at the destination.
Three weeks out. Confirm the move with your moving company. Reconfirm timing, address, parking, and any special items. If you have a piano, gun safe, or hot tub, confirm the equipment they are bringing.
Two weeks out. Start packing non-essentials. Books, off-season clothes, decor. Label by room, not by content. The room label is what matters on move day.
One week out. Pack the kitchen except for what you need. Fill prescriptions. Confirm with the moving company one more time. Withdraw a small amount of cash for any unexpected last-day expenses.
Move day. Have a "do not pack" zone clearly marked. Phone chargers, important documents, medications, valuables, and anything you need access to in the first 24 hours at the new place. Walk through the home one last time after the truck is loaded.
The Central New York additions. If you are moving in winter, expect snow logistics. Driveways need to be cleared, parking permits in some Syracuse neighborhoods need to be pulled in advance, and lake-house moves often need 4WD access. We handle all of this regularly so do not worry, but mention it when you book so we bring the right equipment.
