What movers can and cannot do.
Practical guidelines on items movers will not transport, what to expect on move day, and standards for prep and packing.
What we will not transport
Federal and state regulations restrict what licensed movers can carry. The list is not arbitrary. Most of these items are flammable, hazardous, or perishable in ways that put your other belongings at risk.
- Propane tanks, gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, and fuel of any kind
- Aerosol cans (hairspray, paint, cleaning products)
- Open paint cans, paint thinner, solvents
- Ammunition, fireworks, flares, matches
- Pool chemicals, fertilizers with pesticides, weed killer
- Perishable food (frozen and refrigerated items, fresh produce, opened containers)
- Live plants on interstate moves (regulated for state-line crossings)
- Pets and live animals
Items we recommend you transport personally
These are not banned, but should travel with you for security or sentimental reasons.
- Cash, jewelry, important documents (passports, deeds, birth certificates)
- Medications and medical devices
- Family photos and irreplaceable keepsakes
- Hard drives and external storage with critical data
- Firearms (we can move locked safes; loose firearms travel with the owner)
How to prepare for move day
- 01Disconnect appliances. Refrigerators should be defrosted at least 24 hours in advance and dry inside. Washers should be drained and the drum secured.
- 02Disconnect electronics. Coil cords, label them, and pack them in a bag or box near the device.
- 03Empty drawers in dressers and filing cabinets. Most modern furniture is not designed to be moved with weight inside.
- 04Bag and label hardware (screws, brackets, shelf pins) when disassembling furniture.
- 05Clear the path from front door to driveway. We will lay floor protection but the path needs to be open.
What to expect from our crew
On move day, the lead mover will walk through the home with you, confirm the inventory, and identify any items needing extra attention. The crew lays floor and door protection, wraps furniture in moving pads and shrink wrap, and loads the truck in an order that protects fragile items.
At the destination, the crew unloads in reverse, places furniture in the rooms you specify, and reassembles standard furniture (beds, tables, dressers). You do a final walkthrough before sign-off.
Standards we hold ourselves to
- On time. If we are running late, you will hear from dispatch before the appointment.
- Uniformed crew. Reliable Movers shirts and ID.
- Floor and door protection laid before any furniture moves.
- Furniture pads and shrink wrap on every piece, not just the obviously fragile ones.
- No phones during active loading or unloading.
- Final walkthrough before payment and sign-off.
