Flat Rate vs Hourly Moving: Which Actually Costs More?

Hourly moving quotes look cheaper on paper. Here is why they often end up costing significantly more, and how to evaluate which structure is right for your move.

Flat Rate vs Hourly Moving: Which Actually Costs More?

When you ask a few moving companies for quotes, you will usually see two pricing structures: hourly and flat rate. Most people assume hourly is cheaper because the per-hour number looks small. In our experience, hourly is almost always more expensive in practice. Here is why.

Hourly pricing rewards inefficiency. If a moving company is going to bill you for every hour they are on site, they have no reason to hurry. A 5-hour job becomes a 7-hour job because the crew takes longer breaks, packs the truck slower, and drives an extra route. You pay for every minute.

The clock starts before the work does. Many hourly companies start the clock the moment the truck leaves their yard, not when they arrive at your home. Then they keep the clock running through every break, every coffee stop, and the drive back. Your 4-hour move suddenly bills 6 hours.

Hidden minimums and surcharges. Hourly quotes often come with travel time fees, fuel surcharges, stair fees, long-carry fees, and other line items that the dispatcher never mentioned over the phone. Each one is a few hundred dollars.

Flat-rate pricing flips the incentives. When the price is locked, the moving company has every reason to send experienced crews, work efficiently, and finish on time. Their margin depends on it. The customer pays the agreed price whether the job takes six hours or sixteen.

When hourly might actually make sense. There are cases where hourly is fair: a small studio apartment, a dorm room, a single piece of furniture across town. Anything where the entire job is genuinely under two hours.

For everything else, ask for a flat-rate binding quote. If the moving company refuses to give one, that is information about how they want the day to go.
